Trader faces fraud charge in court

Derrick Afriyie Siaw, a trader in palm oil, was on Tuesday put before the Kade District Magistrate’s court charged with defrauding a woman trader of GH¢1,950 by promising to supply her two-and-a half drums of palm oil which he failed to deliver.

Siaw pleaded guilty with explanation and was granted GH¢4,000 bail with one surety to re-appear on September 07.

Prosecution, Police Inspector Francis Cobbina told the court presided over by Mr Addul Majid Illiasu that in June Mariama Karima, went to a oil palm processing centre at Kade in search of palm oil to buy and met the accused processing palm oil.

He said she contracted him to produce a quantity of palm oil for her within two weeks and gave him GH¢1,950 for the supply of two-and a half drums of the palm oil.

The prosecutor said Siaw failed to deliver on his promise and all efforts the woman made to get back his money proved futile.

Siaw instead played hide and seek with the complainant and later re-located to Ejisu, in the Ashanti Region.

A report was made to the police and Siaw was traced to his hideout and arrested.

In his explanation, the accused said he produced the palm oil but it was stolen and so decided to go and work to pay back the money.
