Three communities in Agona East connected to the national grid

Three farming Communities in the Agona East District of the Central Region have been connected to the national grid under the Rural Electricity Project (REP).

The beneficiary communities- Kweku Ackom, Agona Ofoase and New Asibirim, all the Central Region, are currently enjoying power under the 48 power sub-stations in the Eastern Region.

Commissioning the project, Professor Kwesi Yankah, Minister of State in Charge of Tertiary Education, said government is committed to connecting every village and town in the Agona East district to national grid to enhance socio-economic development.

Prof Yankah said, for over 400 years, these communities are enjoying power for the first time.

Prof Yankah said the electricity supply would boost businesses and rural industrialization to enhance socio-economic advancement of the people.

He said due to the absence of electricity, most of the teachers and nurses refused postings to the those areas, “but now that the communities have been connected, teachers, nurses and paramedics would accept postings to the communities.

Mr Dennis Armah-Frempong, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Agona East cautioned them against abusing the power supply given to them but use it judicially by setting up small scale industries to improve their lot.

He said the Ministry of Energy has asked the District Assembly to submit layouts of all villages to enable them connect to the grid under the Rural Electricity Project (REP) before the end of 2019.

Nana Kweku Dadzie, Chief of Agona Ofoase expressed gratitude to the government and ECG for the power project and assured them that the people would not misuse the power.

Nana Dadzie said the residents especially the women can now engage in other businesses to improve their well-being and hoped that teachers and nurses would accept postings to schools and CHIPs compounds in the area.
