Ghana lifts injunction, reactivates bank accounts of All-Africa Students’ Union

Alhaji Mohammad Mumuni – Ghana’s Foreign Minister

Ghana says it has lifted an injunction it placed on the All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU), an umbrella organization for national unions of students in Africa which has its secretariat in Accra.

The African group, over some few years back, was facing some leadership crises.

The union was told to put in place measures to resolve its longstanding leadership crises, which necessitated the injunction and was also required to hold a congress to review its constitution and elect new executives.

Complying, AASU held its 11th Congress at the Accra International Conference Centre under the auspices of Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Ministry of Education from July 29 to August 1, 2012.

This led to the lifting of the injunction by the Ghana government.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Ministry of Education have lifted the injunction placed on the operations of the All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU) with immediate effect,” the Ghana government said in a statement October 4, 2012.

According to the statement, AASU at its congress, adopted a new constitution and elected new executives through transparent and credible elections.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and Ministry of Education wish to state that the newly elected executives are recognised and given full powers to operate in line with their revised constitution,” the statement said.

The two ministries, the statement says “have also directed AASU Secretariat to resume operations as a subvented organisation under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.”

“As a result of this development, all AASU bank accounts have been reactivated with immediate effect and new signatories to the bank account will be officially introduced to the bank in writing,” it added.
