Ghanaians urged to take advantage of TVET – Minister

Madam Barbara Ayisi Archer, a Deputy Minister of Education, has called on the youth to take advantage of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to empower themselves.

This, she said, would help reduce the unemployment rate and promote economic growth and development in the country.

She said this on Tuesday during a presentation on TVET organized by the Ministry of Information on the Fourth edition of the National Policy Summits (NPS) 2018 taking place in Tamale.

The two day programme is to create a platform for explaining government’s policies, plans and programmes, outlining their objectives, scope and specific areas that private capital was required to achieve set goals.

Mrs Archer said it is in the NPP’s government manifesto, page 108, to improve on TVET, and that the Ministry of Education has developed a TVET Directorate that coordinates all the TVET agencies in the country.

She said government as part of reforming TVET, has realigned all the provisions under the Ministry to ensure effective coordination and supervision to enhance productivity and employment to Ghanaians.

She said the government has created and upgraded 23 technical institutions across the regions in the country to enhance technical and vocational education and training.

Madam Archer said government is also making efforts to encourage young people by providing them with the needed support to venture into agriculture through TVET.

She urged the youth to end the perception that TVET was for people who had poor grades or school dropouts, which is a negative way of retarding young people from achieving and realizing their potentials.

During an interaction session, some of the participants suggested that the ministry should lay emphasis on the guidance and counselling units in various schools to help guide students on their carrier choices.

Some said the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) should also be supported to educate the public on the vital role of TVET education in their lives.

They also urged that Technical and vocational institutions should consistently exhibit their products to the public to help attract more people into the TVET institutions.
