Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia has officially declared his intention to seek re-election as the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the party’s National Delegates Congress on December 7, 2018.

Mr Asiedu Nketia, who is the current NDC General Secretary announced his intention at a press conference to outline the party’s programme for the election of a flagbearer for Election 2020.

Responding to questions from newsmen, Mr Asiedu Nketia affirmed that he will seek re-election, thus putting to rest, speculations that he wanted to contest for the chairmanship slot.

Mr Asiedu Nketia explained that the NDC timetable was based on the realities of the times and in fulfilment of the party’s Constitution, stressing that, the party leadership has taken the decision to allow persons interested to declare their intension and officially inform the party.

He said as per the party’s Constitution, “We are mandated to elect a Flagbearer 24 months to the General Elections and per our calculation; the party is expected to elect its flagbearer by December 7, 2018”.

He said, “We have to give the aspirants enough time to go across the country and campaign.

“On behalf of the National Executive Committee, I wish to declare the campaign period for our presidential primaries officially opened with immediate effect”.’

He stressed that “what this means is that, anybody who intends to contest the slot would have to notify the office of the General Secretary so that at least we are aware that, somebody is going to campaign in the name of the party and that will give us the opportunity to monitor the activities of that person”.

Mr Aseidu Nketia cautioned all candidates seeking to contest regional, national and the presidential slot to desist from engaging in flamboyant campaigns considering the economic hardship in the country.

Party executives have also been prevented from using party structures to endorse a candidate although they are allowed to do so as individuals.

The party he said will give an even playing field to all contesting candidates.
