Take steps to protect animals from diseases

Livestock farmers have been advised to put in place strong biosecurity measures to protect their animals from diseases.

Mr. Michael Konadu, the Sekyere East District Animal Production Officer, said they needed to focus on correct management practices to significantly reduce disease risk.

It was important to ensure that there was proper housing and good sanitation – to keep disease and its vectors from making contact with the animals, he added.

He said that was also the way forward to reducing their spending on animal drugs.

Mr. Konadu, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Effiduase, asked that they sought technical support from veterinary officers on how to manage and control diseases on their farms.

He expressed concern about the situation where many farmers in the district had no proper housing for their livestock.

He also asked that everything was done to prevent animals from grazing on other people’s food crop farms.

Livestock farming, he indicated was a lucrative venture that required sound management and efficient veterinary care to boost returns.

He noted that, it was a business, which if properly managed, would bring tremendous benefits.

Mr. Konadu encouraged the youth to raise livestock to earn more income to change their lives for the better.
