Man remanded for allegedly murdering pregnant girlfriend

The Circuit Court in Tarkwa has remanded a mason into police custody for allegedly murdering his 22 year-old pregnant girlfriend at Asankrangwa.
   
The accused person, Felix Kwasi Zumaba, who has been in custody since the incident occurred behaved strangely when he made his first appearance in court.
   
His plea was not taken and the presiding judge, Mr. Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew directed that Felix should be sent to the psychiatric hospital for examination.
   
He would re-appear before the court on January 30, 2018.
   
The Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman, informed the court that the complainant in the case is a landlord at Newtown, a suburb of Asankragwa whiles the accused, a tenant in the complainant’s house, lived with the deceased who was five months pregnant.
   
She said on December 9 at 11:20 pm, while the complainant was asleep Felix went and pounced on his door.
   
The prosecutor said when the complainant came out of his room he met the accused with blood all over his body, he questioned him, but Felix kept   saying “my wife, my wife”.
   
Inspector Anaman said the complainant raised an alarm and other tenants and neighbours came around.
   
She said on seeing the crowd the accused quickly rushed back to his room and locked the door so they reported the matter to the police.
   
The Prosector said when the police arrived, they found the accused door opened with the deceased and himself lying in a pool of blood with a cutlass beside them.
   
She said the police also identified three deep cuts on the girlfriend’s called Alifatu’s forehead, left jaw and neck, whilst one was seen on the accused throat.
   
Inspector Anaman said the accused person was sent to the Catholic hospital in Asankragwa for treatment under police guard whilst the body of the deceased was deposited at the Enchi government hospital for autopsy.
   
On December 11, the Prosecutor said accused was discharged from the hospital and confessed before an independent witness that he used a cutlass to slashed Alifatu severally in their room following a misunderstanding that ensued between them.
   
Inspector Anaman said after the act accused attempted to commit suicide.
