Industry should deepen collaboration with universities – Consultant

Dr. Peter Amoako-Yirenkyi, Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Consultant, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has called for industry to forge stronger linkages with the universities to grow.

He added that this was the way forward to achieve greater efficiency and become more competitive.

He said companies that adopted research findings of academia in their activities, would have competitive edge over the others as they would be more innovative and creative.

Dr. Amoako-Yirenkyi, addressing the opening session of an international conference on scientific computing and industrial modelling in Kumasi, said it was in their own interest to begin to make use of scientific and evidence-based experiences to stay in business – survive the stiff competition from foreign companies.

The event was organized by the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences Ghana (NIMS), a group committed to the nation’s socio-economic development through the application of science and technology.

“Scientific computing and industrial modelling – a tool for accelerating innovation”, was the theme chosen for the three-day conference.

It has brought together members of the Institute, manufacturers, business administrators, researchers and science students from universities across the nation to discuss solutions to factors inhibiting the growth of local businesses.

Dr. Amaoko-Yirenkyi, who is Director of the Centre for Scientific and Technical Computing at the Institute, asked business operators to move away from the old way of doing things.

They should take advantage of ICT to sustain their operation and boost profitability.

Professor Evans Adei of the KNUST Chemistry Department and a member of the Institute, said the university as a research-based educational institution was determined to assist build the capacity of local business for optimal performance.
