World Bank Ghana organises contest for youth

The World Bank is organising an essay competition and a hackathon competition for the youth, as part of activities to mark the Bank’s 60 years relations with Ghana.

Mr Henry Kerali, Country Director of the World Bank, who announced this in Accra at an event at their Ridge Office, said the contest was open to those between the ages of 16 and 25 years.

“All candidates will be verified to make sure they fall within the specified age ratio,” he stated.

Mr Kerali said the essays would mainly be based on the theme, “How Ghana Can Transform”.

However, candidates could also build their essays on related themes, which are: “What is Transformation?”; “What does Transformation mean for Ghana?”; “What should be the focus of the immediate term and long term for Ghana?”

“All essays moulded around these themes will be deemed eligible,” he explained. “All youths who are eligible encouraged to participate.”

He entreated all applicants to monitor the World Bank Ghana website to register and follow proceedings, saying that the winners would be announced in November.

On the Hackathon, Mr Kerali explained that the Bank would collaborate with the International Business Machines (IBM), which would co-sponsor it. 

Qualified applicants, he said, would be assembled in one location to perform a task of creating a software application within a specified duration.

The aim is to develop software that has application for Ghana. A team from World Bank and IBM would moderate the contest to avoid any form of cheating on the part of participants.

“This event is set to take place sometime between late November and early December” he said.
