Government allocates GHȼ23m to complete military accommodation – Minister
Government has budgeted GH¢23 million to complete the construction of 18 uncompleted accommodation for the Ghana Armed Force (GAF) across the country, Mr Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister of Defence has said.
He said the project, which was initiated by a loan contracted by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust in 2007, was expected to be completed by the end of December and urged contractors on the project to speed up work to ease congestion in the military.
The Minister said this when he visited the military units in Tema to acquaint himself with the operations of work and to chart the way forward in improving service delivery.
The entourage visited the Eastern Naval Command in Tema, paid a courtesy call on Nii Adjei Kraku II, the Tema Mantse, the GAF Recruit Training School in Shai Hills, the Base Ammunition Depot and the First Infantry Battalion all in Michel Camp.
He said government had budgeted GHȼ100,000.00 for the renovation of the GAF Recruit Training School due to the deplorable state of the facility.
He said government had awarded the contract for three high buildings for the military in places that have serious accommodation challenges.
The Minister also said government had plans to build a hospital in Tamale by February next year as well as upgrade and build the third phase of the 37 Military Hospital to improve the health care of personnel and the citizenry.
He said government had started processes to review the service years from 25 to 30 years, adding that the process would be implemented when it goes through parliamentary approval process.
He commended the personnel for their selfless contributions to the nation.
He said the country would do all it could to resource the GAF to perform its duty in an efficient manner.
Mr Nitiwul expressed concern about the level of encroachment on military lands across the country and charged authorities to take steps to secure the properties in the country by documenting them.
He also instructed the military authorities to constitute an investigation team on rumours that some soldiers were aiding the operations of illegal mining in the country, saying any personnel found culpable would face the law.
