Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has called for the police to be alert, firm and even-handed in the performance of their duties.

They needed to maintain high standard of professionalism to give confidence to everybody as the nation readied to go to the polls.

He was speaking when the Inspector-General of Police, John Kudalor, paid a courtesy call on him at his Manhyia Palace at the start of his two-day official tour of the Ashanti Region.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu said it was important to help the people to overcome anxiety – the fear of potential trouble and confusion as the political parties intensified their election campaign to woo voters.

He reminded the IGP that the loyalty of the police was to the state and the people but not to any political party.

Their duty was to ensure that everybody got right with the law to protect the peace and security of the society.

The Asantehene used the occasion to encourage the people to give strong support to the police to arrest and bring to justice those, who had chosen to live outside the law.

IGP Kudalor appealed to chiefs to use their tremendous influence with the people to discourage them from acts likely to jeopardize the nation’s peace.

He repeated the determination of the police to ensure that this year’s election was conducted in an atmosphere free from fear, intimidation and chaos.
