Illegal Ghanaian migrants in Italy to be denied asylum

ItalyAbout 3,500 Ghanaian illegal migrants seeking political asylum in Italy would not be granted their request, for the reason that Ghana is a peaceful and democratic country, according to the Ecology of the Migratory Flow (EMF).

The EMF is an international humanitarian organisation specialised in migration issues that seeks to dissuade prospective migrants from uncertain journeys to Europe and other continents.

It also provides legal, financial and social assistance to migrants willing to return to their countries of origin and also helps migrants stuck in the transition countries of the Maghreb, to come back home.

A statement issued by the EMF and signed by the Founder and Executive Director, Dr Liliane Murekatete, said about 5,000 Ghanaians  are however legal residents and are actively pursuing their activities with the freedoms that they deserve as obedient residents.

Dr Murekatete who is currently in Ghana, has held consultative meetings with the Ministers of Interior; Employment and Labour Relations; Gender, Children and Social Protection and Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.

She said she was concerned about Ghana because her outfit, with the collaboration of her mother organisation KARIBU, is providing accommodation, healthcare, food and skills training to illegally migrated Ghanaians.

She said the support and skills training was aimed at relocating them in Ghana in order to live dignified lives by the first quarter of 2017.

Dr Murekatete said her visit to Ghana is to understand the major causes of irregular immigration of Ghanaians into Italy and to discuss with officials the way forward on the movement of Ghanaians to European countries.

The Executive Director who has served as Assistant Officer in the Italian Parliament and rose through the ranks to become the Acting Personal Representative of the Italian Prime Minister for Africa and G8-Africa, called for partnership from both public and private organisations in Ghana to support her to make illegal Ghanaians resident in Italy comfortable.
