Alcoholism said to be responsible for poor education standards

PupilsThe District Director of Education in charge of the Kassena-Nankana West District, Mr Augustine Bugase, has said alcoholism and drug abuse among the youth was one of the major causes of fallen standards of education in the District.

Speaking at the homecoming durbar organized by the Nakolo Students Union (NASU) on Wednesday at Nakolo, he appealed to students in the area to desist from the practice since it would jeopardize their future.

He urged the leadership of NASU to speak against the social canker as one of their core duties.

Mr Solomon Awarewe, the Patron of NASU, expressed worry about the trend and said some parents, instead of spending their resources to cater for their children’s education, spend them on alcohol and called for a change.

The President of NASU, Mr Anthony Adatu Kaba, said one of the major reasons for organizing the homecoming was to mobilize resources to put up a library with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities.

He said as students, they had not been able to contribute enough but with the little resources they had mobilized, they had bought six trips of sand and persuaded the community to release land for the project.

Mr Kaba appealed to the government and non-governmental organizations to support the Union to complete its projects.

He also appealed to the government and other stakeholders to help provide irrigation dams in the area to empower famers to undertake dry season farming.

Mr Abuga Pele, the Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, pledged his support for the Union and assured them that he would donate some computers for the ICT Centre.

He said he would also support the development of the area by donating 40,000 Ghana cedis as part of a National Health Insurance package to help construct accommodation facilities for the health staff in the area and would also ensure that the area benefitted from the rural electrification project.
