NGO launches sexual education project

SexThe Savanna Signatures, a non-governmental organization using Information Communication Technology (ICT) for development on Wednesday launched a Sexual Health Education (SHE) project designed to educate young people about sexual and reproductive health and their rights.

The platform is free and allows young people both male and female with mobile phones to register and access information by simple text to 7000 on MTN, 1904 for Airtel, Expresso and Vodafone networks.

Mr Stephen Agbenyo, Executive Director of the Savanna Signatures who launched the project in Tamale said it was part of efforts to use innovative ICT tools to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Northern and Volta regions of Ghana

He said Savana Signatures was already implementing the technology for maternal health project in six health facilities in the northern region where expectant mothers were receiving weekly SMS in English and voice calls in Dagbani for those that could not read.

“The organization is also implementing a project referred to as the “World Starts With Me” (WSWM) a computer based Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE) programme in 4 schools in the Northern Region and 4 in the Upper West region using computers to educate teachers and students on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights”, he said.

Mr Agbenyo said the SHE project was supported by TEXT TO CHANGE (TTC) which was an organization that set up interactive mobile campaigns, disseminating relevant information and collecting data from end-users using their own mobile handsets.

He noted that the organization was focused on developing flexible and easily accesible mobile platforms for sending and receiving messages; platforms that helped users to interact with the often difficult to reach audience by creating an interactive dialogue.

just make sure you dont start promoting homosexuality in our country. we know there are great forces making alot of funds available for such causes, therefore there will be temptations for all sorts of selfish people to put linning their pockets first and put the upholding of a moral Ghanaian society secondary as they establish all sorts of funny ngos to promote ……’sexual rights’. My fellow Ghanaians do not swallow this thing called ‘democracy’ wholesomely (it is fundamentally someone elses culture) not all change is positive. Pick out what we as Ghanaians see as positive ideals and resists the evils it brings.
