Three arraigned for assault

Three persons on Wednesday appeared before an Accra circuit court for conspiring to commit assault, committing assault, abetment to cause harm, and causing harm to one Godwin Againab.

The three; Nana Kofi Nuako, Patricia Nuako, and Yussif Haruna pleaded not guilty to all the charges and were granted bail by the court, presided over by Madam Ellen Amoah, to reappear on November 20.

Nana Kofi and Patricia were granted bail in the sum of GHc 40,000.00 each with two sureties, while Yussif was granted bail in the sum of GHc 60,000.00 with two sureties, one to be justified.

The facts of the case, as presented by Madam Stella Ohene Appiah, State Attorney, are that the complainant, Godwin Againab and the first accused person, Nana Kofi, are neighbours and both reside at Akoko Foto, a suburb of Dansoman in Accra.

She said Nana Kofi caused a trench to be dug across a common access route used by all neighbours in the vicinity.

Madam Ohene Appiah said on August 8, 2008, at about 1800 hours, Godwin hired some people to seal the trench to enable him to enter his house with his car after he had made a report to the police.

She said in the cause of the work, Patricia, the daughter of Nana, threatened the workers that she was going to bring ‘strong’ people to stop them from sealing the trench and took out her phone to make a call.

The prosecution told the court that, moments later, one Isaac Bawa, now at large, arrived at the scene and approached the complainant, who told him what they were doing and that there was no problem at the scene.

She said Bawa then called his friends namely, Abu Alhassan, Redwan Ibrahim and Bernard Papa Nii Mills, all at large, who came and started assaulting everybody on sight.

Yussif then came out of his house and pulled out a knife, slashed the complainant on the left side of his neck, after which they drugged him and dumped him into a nearby manhole filled with water.

The prosecution said the complainant managed to get out of the manhole himself and rushed to the Dansoman Police Station, after which he was issued a medical form to attend hospital whiles the accused persons were later arrested.
