GRIDCO workers urged to adhere to health and safety regime

construction-workersMr William Amuna, Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), on Friday charged workers of the company to adhere strictly to its health and safety regime to ensure high productivity.

“In our industry, we work in a very dangerous environment and we have no choice but to ensure that employees are constantly aware of the risks they face on a daily basis and for them to be confident and adequately empowered to take steps to manage those risks.”

Mr Amuna, who gave the advice at the company’s 2013 safety awards durbar of the company in Tema, on Friday, said Management has resolved to use safety and health as a performance indicator in GRIDCo’s business objectives, strategies and processes.

The durbar, which also marked the fifth anniversary of GRIDCo, was on the theme: “Preventing Occupational Accidents; Five Years and Beyond”.

According to him, occupational safety and health measures must be a way of life for every employee which should not be compromised.

He said “each of us is therefore required to be a change leader and champion issues of health and safety, which are very critical to the operation of a successful business or organization”.

He gave the assurance that management would pursue its planned system improvement and reinforcement projects to build a system, which was comparable to the best networks in the world.

He disclosed that his outfit was also putting in measures to ensure the procurement of very high standard personal protective gears for its operational staff.

Specialized awards (Chief Executive Safety award) were presented to Mr Bawa Benzoa, Mr Aaron Tetteh, Mr Samson K. Nartey, Mr Samuel Effah, and Mr Ebenezer Boahen Ofori for their commitment to safety.

For their prizes, they each received a citation and a 32 inch Light Emitting Diode (LED) television

For the company’s Work Area Safety Committee (WASACO) Awards, the Techiman, Prestea and Takoradi areas were presented with shields and branded clocks for emerging, third, second and first respectively, in the operational sector.

The Gyau Towers’ branch also emerged the overall for the non-operational areas.
