UCC to operate business incubator for entrepreneurs
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) School of Business in partnership with Bonn-Rhein-Seig University of Applied Sciences, Germany, is setting-up a business incubator, which would soon be in operation, Vice-Chancellor Professor Domwine Kuupole has disclosed.
The facility will assist young entrepreneurs to fully develop their potentials to start new businesses or upgrade existing ones.
The Vice Chancellor made this known at the 46th congregation of the University of which a total of 3,891 students graduated.
Of the number 253 obtained first class, 1,521 had second class upper division, 1,337 got second class lower division, 597 secured third class while 183 received passes.
Due to the large numbers of the graduates, the university held the congregation in three sessions on Friday and Saturday with 1,270 graduates from the faculties of Arts, social Sciences and the Schools of Business, Agriculture, Biological and Physical sciences who were awarded degrees, diplomas and certificates graduating on Friday.
Graduates of the Education Faculty which had the largest number had their turn on Saturday.
Prof Kuupole announced a Master of Science programme in Disaster Management by the Faculty of Social Sciences through the sandwich mode, a programme, which would train people to come up with strategies to help curb disasters in the country.
This has become necessary as a result of the fact that road safety for instance had become national disasters needing special attention, he explained.
On infrastructural development, Prof Kuupole noted that even though there has not been much progress as a result of inadequate budgetary allocation to the university, measures have been put in place to prioritise and complete some projects.
These include the new central administration block which the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET fund) is to provide special funds for its completion by 2014.
Other projects the GET fund has accepted to provide special funding for their completion are the Faculty of Science annex building and rehabilitation of the main auditorium of the university.
Prof Kuupole said plans are far advanced to improve upon ICT infrastructure on campus, explaining that fibre optic cable have been laid to connect all academic areas while the bandwidth would soon be increased from 45mbps to 155mbps to speed up accessing of the internet.
Ms Yaa Ataffuah , Acting Copyright Administrator of the Copyright Ghana, who was the motivational speaker entreated graduates not to resign themselves to fate and tag themselves unemployed but should rather be creative and innovative since the formal sector cannot absorb all of them.
Delivering the valedictory address, the overall best graduating student, Mr Joseph Issah Awinyam, who had first class honours in Basic Education, encouraged his colleagues to work hard in their field of specialty even in the face of adversity to ensure a better future.
Awards ranging from cash to book prizes were presented to deserving graduating students.
