Consumers should show interest in quality of products – GSA

market1Mr Kofi Nagety, Deputy Executive Director of Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), on Wednesday asked consumers to show interest in the safety and quality of products they purchased.

He said quality and safety have the power to influence trade, economic growth and livelihood and should be considered as very important.

Briefing the media on the activities of GSA with regards to quality infrastructure, Mr Nagetey explained that goods and services must not just be seen to be produced but must exhibit quality and safety as the hallmark of their characteristics to inspire confidence in consumers.

“We need to collaborate with each other to ensure high level of quality consciousness and protection for the interest of all of us,” he stressed.

Mr Kofi Amponsah Bediako, Public Relations Director of GSA who took the media through the operations of the Authority said its main mission is to promote standardisation, conformity assessment and metrology for the improvement of the quality of goods, services as well as sound management practices in public institutions and industries.

He noted that services rendered by GSA are aimed at facilitating trade, reducing proliferation of sub-standard goods on the market, protecting public health and safety as well as promoting and enhancing the growth of industries.

He asked Ghanaians to embrace standardisation, conformity assessment and metrology, which he described as the tools that could address the key challenges of the 21st century.

Mr Kwabena Acheampong, Head of the Metrology Division said the GSA as the custodian of weights and measures, has embarked on an exercise to promote the use of weighing scales for trade, starting from the farm gate.

“We have started with maize and this is in collaboration with the National Grains Council using their warehouse where traders come to buy maize and it will bring about fairness in our trade system,” he added.
