Energy Minister commends GEM

Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, a Deputy Minister for Energy and Petroleum (MoEP), has commended Ghana Electrometer (GEM) for its contribution to the country’s revenue collection since its establishment in 2004.

Mr Jinapor made the remarks when he interacted with officials of GEM and attributed the success of the company to the quality and high standard electric meters they have been producing in the sub region.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday by the Communications Unit of MoEP said, GEM which is currently the only local electric meter assembly plant in Ghana, and one of two in the West African sub region, is producing ISO/ IEC certified credit and pre-paid meters to some government and electricity companies in the West African sub region.

It said the Deputy Minister’s interaction with the officials of GEM focused on ways of engaging the company in government’s quest to make electricity accessible to every Ghanaian.

“Government is taking seriously its local content policies in the energy sector and ‘will support Ghanaians to venture into areas hitherto dominated by foreign companies’, it said.

Mr Jinapor urged other local manufacturers to produce both locally and internationally certified products to boost the confidence of Ghanaians in them saying “Ghana-made electric meters have proven to be of high standard and quality than many imported ones”.
