Two in court for attempted robbery at Voltic Ghana

Bottled waterTwo persons have been arraigned at an Accra circuit court for conspiracy to commit robbery and preparation to commit crime to wit robbery, contrary to sections 23 (1) and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act.

The two, Samuel Hlovor Gawuga, a sales representative and William Elly Zeggy, businessman, were said to have conspired to commit robbery at Voltic Ghana Limited, in the Greater Accra Region.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the offences, but were remanded into prison custody to reappear on August 13, 2013.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Tuaruka Duuti told the court that the complainants are policemen stationed at the Regional CID, Accra, whilst the first accused person Samuel is a sales representative at Voltic Ghana Limited and the second accused a businessman residing at North Kaneshie.

He said on July 17, the Police had information that Samuel had confided in William, a friend, to organize some young men to rob the daily sales at his office.

DSP Duuti said the Police intelligence team moved in and met William, who directed the team to meet Samuel at his office, to show them around the office.

He said William also gave the undercover policemen, two Voltic Ghana Limited branded tags, which would be hanged around their neck on the day of the robbery.

The prosecution told the court that Samuel took the policemen round his office and showed them where the daily sales were kept and also identified the accountant’s office and insisted that the robbery must take place on Friday July 19.

He said Samuel also insisted that the time of the robbery should be at 1700 hours when most of the office staff would be away, and that, a gun must be fired to scare the security men at post.

DSP Duuti said on July 19, William and Samuel called the undercover policemen to confirm the robbery, and that Samuel, informed them that he would be in his office at 2000 hours during which the robbery would take place.

He said Samuel was arrested on his way to his office after calling William that the men were around and ready to strike.

According to the prosecution, William in his investigation caution statement claimed he was approached by Samuel, who planned the whole operation and he agreed to it.
