Gov’t to shift GYEEDA to Employment Ministry

Nii Armah Ashietey, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, has welcomed government’s decision to transfer Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) to his Ministry.

The GYEEDA, formerly National Youth Employment Programme, is currently under the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Nii Ashietey said the decision is welcomed as it would make the Ministry to take full charge over the employment issues facing the youth.

The Minister made this known when he visited staff and students of Biriwa Vocational Training and Rehabilitation Centre in the Mfantseman Municipality.

Nii Ashietey said the unemployment problem facing the youth is becoming a national security threat, and called for collective efforts to find solutions to it.

He said the solution to unemployment lie in paying serious attention to technical and vocational training.

Mr Stephen Bismark Amponsah, Executive Director of the National Vocational Training Institute, said arrangement s are being made to allow graduates from vocational institutes to pursue Higher National Diploma courses at the polytechnics.

Mr Amponsah called on vocational institutes to find means of creating internally generated funds to support their activities.

Nana Kwa Bonko, Chief of Biriwa, appealed to the Minister to provide the institute with a vehicle and other facilities.

Mr Samuel Kwashie Amegbor, Manager of the Centre, appealed to the Ghana Education Trust Fund to provide the institute with a boys’ hostel.

He said the boys are staying in rented houses and this does not augur well for instilling discipline.
