Ghana’s e-government project sites are now been upgraded to long-term evolution (LTE), a 4th generation standard for high-speed data, a government official has said.
The project sites are currently running on Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) which is providing about 30 to 40 megabit-per-second data rates.
Briefing the press July 30, 2013 in Accra, Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Dr Omane Boamah said “presently, the Ghana e-government platform project is upgrading existing WIMAX sites to LTE.”
According to the Minister, the upgrade “will involve 90 sites” and is to enable the deployment of advanced ICT applications in education, health, commerce, Open Government and other business opportunities.
Funded by the World Bank, the $40 million e-Ghana project is to assist the Ghana government to generate growth and employment by leveraging Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and public-private partnerships.
Its objective is to develop the IT-enabled services industry, and to contribute to improved efficiency and transparency of selected government functions through e-government applications.
