Taskforce disconnects illegal electricity in Swedru

ElectricityA taskforce made up of the Police, Fire Service and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) officials over the weekend embarked on an exercise to disconnect illegal electricity connections at the Swedru Central Market.

The disconnection follows a recommendation by the taskforce, formed by the Agona West Municipal Assembly, which identified that 65 per cent of electricity connections at the market were illegal and could cause fire outbreaks.

Addressing journalists after the exercise, Mr Stephen Agortor, Municipal and Rural Fire Coordinator for the Agona West Fire Station, said the taskforce found out that a majority of the electrical connections were not done by qualified electricians.

He said the situation could easily cause fire outbreak during power outages.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Philip Nortey, Agona Swedru Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), urged market women not to display their wares in the middle of the road.

He said the MTTU has deployed personnel to ensure free flow of traffic on the road linking Akim Oda and Agona Kwanyako behind the market.

Mr Samuel Oppong, Agona West Municipal Chief Executive told journalists that the Assembly has engaged committed electrical contractors to re-wire the market.
