134 killed in road accidents in Ashanti Region

accidentOne hundred and thirty-four (134) people perished in road crashes in the Ashanti Region, during the first half of the year.

Seventy-five (75) of the fatalities occurred between January and March and the remaining within the following three months.

Police Chief Superintendent G. D. Hlordzi, the Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that 898 others were either maimed or injured.

In all, there were 622 reported crashes, involving commercial vehicles, saloon cars and motorbikes.

He put the number of pedestrian knock downs during the period under review at 136.

Chief Superintendent Hlordzi said although the statistics showed significant reduction of deaths between April and June, the period saw more road crashes.

The MTTU Regional Commander underlined the determination of the police to do everything to ensure discipline on the roads and to assure travelers of their safety.

He said they would arrest and bring to justice road traffic offenders to stop the carnage.
