Sports Authority selects 11 disciplines for Unity Games

CrowdThe National Sports Authority (NSA) has selected 11 sporting disciplines to be competed for at the 2013 National Unity Games fixed for Kumasi, from 11-18 August.

The selected disciplines are; Boxing, Athletics, Table Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Handball, Volleyball, Taekwondo, Karate-Do, Swimming and Disabled Sports.

In addition, traditional Wrestling and Weightlifting will also be on stage.

Information gathered by GNA Sports indicates that the selected disciplines were settled on due to the nation’s competitive advantage in them as well as logistics and monetary considerations.

According to the information, there were serious logistics and financial constraints when over 20 disciplines were selected for the last Unity Games held in Accra in 2011, hence the decision to screen the number of disciplines this term.

The selected disciplines, is expected to serve as a dress rehearsal for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Unity Games is expected to provide the Associations of the selected disciplines the opportunity to examine their athletes and select the best for the Commonwealth Games.

The organizers have fixed Wednesday, July 10, for the formal launching of the Games in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, Minister of Youth and Sports, with support from officials of the NSA will conduct the launching.
