Virgin Atlantic says high fuel costs forces it to suspend Ghana operations
British airline company, Virgin Atlantic says it is suspending operations from the Ghanaian capital, Accra to London due to what it describes as “exceptionally high fuel costs” in the country.
Other factors for the service suspension it says include a challenging wider economic environment and an inability to operate morning arrivals from Accra due to scarcity of slots at Heathrow.
The airline says its last flight from Accra to London will depart September 23, 2013.
The airline launched its Accra services three years ago on May 24, 2010.

CHEAP DISCOUNT AIRLINES ARE THE PROBLEM AND CHEAP FARES WHO DON’T CARE ABOUT THE SERVICES TROTRO. IT A SHAME. AGAIN VIRGIN HAVE A LOT OF ISSUES EVEN IN NORTH AMERICA BECAUSE THEY ARE LOOSING MONEY LEFT CENTRE RIGHT
This is a poor excuse for terminating what is already a badly run operation. Flights to Accra from the UK are already exorbitant for a six hour flight to a country in the same time zone. Travellers are paying prices similar to those for getting to destinations in Thailand and Australia which are double the distance.
Virgin should be ashamed of this. After the horrible experience I had flying with them to Accra, I will not be flying with them anywhere else. My return journey was even worse as seating had to be ‘re-arranged’ across a very empty flight in order to+balance+the+exceptional+amount+of+cargo+they+were+carrying.+Food+that+looked+like+baby+pooh+and+acting+as+the+official+carrier+for+transporting+distressed+deportees+from+the+UK+determined+to+disrupt+services+as+much+as+possible,+haven’t+helped.
The+truth+is+that+they+haven’t+been+very+efficient+in+a+competitive+market+and+instead+of+rethinking+the+services+they+offer,+they+are+choosing+to+hold+travelers+to+ransom+for+their+ineffectiveness.+Cost+of+fuel+has+never+been+cheap+in+Ghana,+ask+the+average+man+on+the+street!
This is a shame. Ghanians just don’t appreciate what they have until is gone. Soon to come we will be left with no direct flights from uk to accra. Ministers needs to step in and do something about this cux virgin runs a great service to accra
I hope da govt will intervene in this issue. where else r we goin to get such good airline service at such cheap price? I jz pray dey ll change their minds as soon as possible
