Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Assembly fails to elect Presiding Member
The Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District Assembly on Friday failed to elect a Presiding Member after three rounds of voting.
Five people contested – Mr Thomas Nsiah, Mr Joseph Appiah, Mr Evans Escobar Donkoh, Nana Akwasi Adjei and Mr Gyampong Okumawuo.
After round one of the balloting could not produce a winner, the three contestants with the least votes withdrew their nomination.
That set the stage for a straight battle between Mr Okumawuo and Nana Adjei but the deadlock could not be broken as none of them was able to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority votes.
Mr Okumawuo polled 25 votes as against the 19 garnered by Nana Adjei.
To be elected, a candidate is required to have the backing of not less than 36 members of the 50-member assembly.
The election, supervised by the District Electoral Officer, Mr Owusu Afriyie, was postponed to May 14.
