Ghana issues authorization licences to 12 new radio stations to operate

Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) says it has issued authorization licences to 12 new radio stations to operate in the country.

Three of the 12 new radio stations are community based while the remaining nine are commercial, the NCA said in a statement April 26, 2013.

The NCA authorized their operations during the first quarter of 2013.

The community radio stations are Edubeaseman FM, New Edubease; Okese Development Association, Ejisu; and Action For Community Transformation, Wechiau.

The following are the commercial ones; ABC Communications, Akim Oda; Best Text Company, Takoradi; West End Media Consult, Wa; Ferpomar Multimedia, Japekrom; Laura Community Radio, Lawra and Time FM, Akumadan.

The rest are Source FM, Bawku; Action For Community Transformation, Wechiau; XYZ Broadcasting, Kumasi; and Crystal Lens Radio, Dzodze.

Community broadcasting is non-profit service and is owned and managed by particular communities. The principal  aim is to serve and benefit the particular communities. It is, in effect, a form of public-service broadcasting, but serves specific communities rather than the entire nation, the NCA said.

Commercial or private broadcasting provides programmes designed primarily for profit from advertising revenue and is owned and controlled by private individuals, or by commercial enterprises, it added.
