Egypt defeats Ghana on penalties to lift Africa U-20 trophy

footballA determined Ghana U-20 side fell short from the spot as they lost 5-4 on penalties to Egypt in the final of the 2013 African Youth Championship.

Both sides needed the penalty lottery to decide the game after drawing 1-1 in 120 minutes of football in Oran in Algeria on Saturday night.

It was a final that saw all goals being scored from the spot.

The winners opened the scoring just two minutes into the start of the game after they were awarded a penalty with Gomaa Ouda beating goalkeeper Ofori Antwi.

Three minutes later, Ghana also had a penalty decision going their way as Jeremiah Arkorful drew the Black Satellites level.

The tie traveled the long haul of extra time as the Young Pharoahs finished winners after Michael Anaba missed the sixth kick which handed the Egyptians the advantage of scoring the decisive kick. Joseph Attamah also missed from the spot.

The loss denied Ghana a fourth title in the U-20 Championship as it also blanked coach Sellas Tetteh the joy on entering the record books as the first Ghana trainer to win two titles at the Championship.

Despite the loss, Ghana will have a World Cup finals to look forward to in Turkey. The tournament will be played June 21-July 13 in seven Turkish cities.
