Rotary promotes post-election peace in Ghana

The Rotary Club of Apam District 9100 at the weekend embarked on a peace walk, to promote peace and understanding among the people after the December 2012 elections in Ghana.

Youth groups, representatives of political parties and religious organisations joined the walk, which marked the Rotary International’s declaration of February 2013 as a month of peace and understanding.

Dr Mark Nii Lamptey, Director of Service Projects of the Rotary Club, and Mr Francis Yawson, President of the Club, jointly presented peace message to Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Gomoa West, in which the Rotarians commended the DCE for ensuring peace in the area.

The Rotarians also praised chiefs, security agencies, media, political parties, religious leaders and youth for displaying maturity during the polls.

The message said: “we are in a critical post-election era where the verdict of the election is being contested at the Supreme Court”.

It praised asked the  DCE to support the National Commission for Civic Education, the Information Services Department and the Inter Party Dialogue Committee with resources to enable them to educate people in the district on the need to settle election disputes at court.

The message asked the National Peace Council to educate Ghanaians on the importance of peace to national development.

It also  appealed to supporters of the NPP and NDC to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court on the NPP petition on  results of the 2012 presidential election.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah thanked the Rotary Club for its concern for peace in the country, and asked Ghanaians to collectively ensure peace for development.
