Awutu-Senya District records 27,679 malaria cases in 2012

mosquitoHealth centres in Awutu-Senya District in 2012 recorded 27,679 malaria cases at Out-Patients Departments (OPDs) as against 31,595 cases in 2011.

This is because the people, particularly pregnant women and children below five years of age, have appreciated malaria prevention education, and sleep under long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets.

Mrs Patricia Antwi, Awutu-Senya District Director of Ghana Health Service (GHS), announced these at the 2012 Annual Review performance meeting at Awutu-Beraku at the weekend.

She said the OPDs continued to record high number of hypertension cases in the district, however, the Kasoa Health Centre which has been upgraded to the status of Polyclinic, has been organising weekly clinics to educate the people on hypertension and diabetes.

Mrs Antwi advised Ghanaians to eat balanced diets, exercise their bodies regularly and undergo regular medical check-ups.

She said during the year under review, one cholera case was reported in the district, but it was well-managed.

Mrs Antwi said that the surveillance system needed to be strengthened as no case of Acute Flaccid Paralise was detected.

She said tuberculosis cases reduced from 136 in 2011 to 125 in 2012, while supervised delivery coverage increased from 7,165 in 2011 to 7,752 in 2012.
