Chirano Mines spends $3.3m on catchment communities

Mining PitChirano Gold Mines Limited (CGML) 2012 spent a total of $3,355,034 to provide infrastructure for six of its catchment communities in 2012.

The projects include four school blocks and a clinic with nurses’ quarters.

Mr. Ken Norris, General Manager of the mine, told journalists that the company would continue to support projects in water, sanitation, education and health sectors.

CGML will also play its complimentary roles to transform the lives of the people living in nearby communities.

He said employment is one the main challenge that confronts the company and to overcome it, another youth training programme had been initiated to give skills training to the youth who are not employed but have high hopes for securing some jobs in the mine.

“We are training some youths in heavy duty truck driving, fuel attendance and at the processing plant to acquire some skills that will make them employable not only within the mine but at other mines as well,” he said.

Mr. Norris said the mine would not engage in any act that would endanger the life of its employees or communities that are close to the mine.

He said more lives would be transformed with the new focus on recruiting many youths from local communities.
