Government urged to put more resources into education
The National Ministers Conference of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, has called for the government to do everything to ensure that more resources are put into the development of education.
This, it said, was the way to go, to achieve socio-economic progress and the growth of the nation’s democracy.
The Reverend Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, its President, addressing the official opening of their annual meeting at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, said they found it refreshing the pledge by the government to establish a public university in all the regions.
“We trust that all these universities will be well endowed in order to achieve the purpose for which they were established – to develop the human resource capacity of the nation.”
The five-day meeting, attended by over 700 ministers of the church from across the country, is being held under the theme: “The Holy Spirit and Peace – Blessed are the peace makers”.
It would serve as a retreat, spiritual renewal, theological reflection and fellowship.
The Rev Mante pleaded for the re-visit of the four-year senior high school (SHS) system, in view of the remarkable performance of its products.
He also suggested an increase in students’ admission into the Colleges of Education, instead of building new ones.
He used the occasion to appeal to people peeved by the outcome of the last elections not to do anything to undermine the peace, noting that “Ghana’s democracy is too fragile to be pushed to the wall.”
“Seek for what is right but please seek for redemptive justice and not vindictive justice.”
The Rev Mante reminded his colleague ministers to make sure that their sermons and teachings fostered peace in families and in the nation.
He added that said they should serve as “instruments of peace in this broken world”.
Professor Otoo Ellis, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, urged the ministers to continue to pray for national unity and stability since the country was “not yet out of the woods”.
