EC will declare Election 2012 results when ready – Dr Afari-Gyan

Dr. Afari-Gyan – Chairman of Electoral Commission

Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), on Wednesday said the Commission will declare the results of Election 2012  when they are ready.

“The commission will announce the time and place for the declaration of the 2012 presidential election results when it is ready to do so,” Dr Afari-Gyan told the Ghana News Agency in a telephone interview.

The EC Chairman said: “We will not be limited by any timeline to announce the Presidential results, but will work within reasonable time to announce the results”.

He, however, reminded all Ghanaians that the EC was the only body in the country authorized by law to conduct public elections and to declare the results.

There has been a lot of pressure on the EC as most political parties are calling on the Commission to declare the results by 72 hours after the close of polls on December 7.

Dr Afari-Gyan also urged the general public to ignore any person or group that attempts to announce the final results of the 2012 general election.

The EC Chairman appealed to the media to abide by the Ghana Journalists Association, National Media Commission, and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association guidelines on election reporting to ensure that the press was not seen as the originator of any trouble.

He said it was only the EC’s certified results that should be announced by the press and urged them to crosscheck any information, allegations and complaints or pieces of information that came their way before going public, to make them credible.

Fellow Brothers and Sisters, it is time for us to go back to the poll again to exercise or franchise to elect a new leader to spear head the affairs of this nation of ours Ghana.to have peace among us is intelligence so let us all be wise in all our dealings during this period. Only his majesty appoints leaders in the midst of his people to rule. Life in this ephemeral world is short; humanity should come to the realization that we are all equal in the fact that we are all different. We are all the same to the fact that we are united by the reality that all colors and all cultures are distinct and individual. We are harmonious in the reality that we are all held at this earth by the same gravity. We don’t share blood, but we share the air that keeps us alive. I will not blind myself and say that my brother is not different from me. I will not blind myself and say that my sister is not different from me. But my brother and sister are as much as I am me.
However, the downfall of the attempts of governments and leaders to unite mankind is found in this-in the wrong message that we should see everyone as the same. This is the root of the failure of harmony. Because the truth is, we should not all see everyone as the same. We are not the same. We are made of different colors and we have different cultures. We are all different. But the key to this door is to look at these differences, learn from and about these differences, and grow in and with these differences. We are all different. We are not the same. But that’s beautiful. In the quest for unity and peace, we cannot blind ourselves and expect to be all the same. Because in this, we all have an underlying belief that everyone should be the same as us at some point.
Fellow Comrades, be realistic and exercise your power based on issues and changes you want to see in your area and Ghana at large. I have the audacity to believe that people’s everywhere can have three meals a day for the bodies, education and culture for their minds and dignity, equality and freedom for their Spirits and Spiritual Divinity. As Martin Luther King Jnr once said as I quoted “one day we must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but that it is a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means”. I pray to God Almighty to grant us wisdom and extelligence at this moment for a free, fair and peaceful election in the next few hours. Long Live the Truth which will prevail forever, Long Live Ghana and Long Live His Throne Above. ABDUL-RAHMAN ABDULLAI,UNIVERSITY OF GHANA,LEGON
