Ghana establishes diplomatic relations with Montenegro, Fiji

Ghana has signed a communiqué to establish diplomatic relations with two countries, Montenegro and Fiji.

This, according to officials, is to promote mutual understanding and to strengthen the friendship and cooperation among the countries.

Ghana’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Nations, Mr Ken Kanda, signed for his side, while his counterparts from Montenegro, Mr Milorad Scepanovic, and Mr Peter Thomson of Fiji initialed for their respective countries, the government’s Information Services Department reported October 23, 2012.

This was at separate ceremonies held in New York.

According to the communiqué, Ghana and the two countries agreed to be guided by the principles and purpose of the United Nations Charter and their norms on international law.

Particularly, they referred to laws pertaining to the promotion of international peace and security, the respect for state sovereignty, equality among states, independent territorial integrity, international treaties and non-interference in the internal affairs of States.

Montenegro was formerly part of Serbia & Montenegro. It was recognised as a State by the UN General Assembly June 28, 2006.

Fiji became the 127th member of the United Nations on October 13, 1970.
