Kumasi Technical Institute tutor wins 2012 national best teacher award

Mrs Patricia Ampofowaah Boso, a 41 year-old radio and electronic tutor at the Kumasi Technical Institute on Friday won this year’s national best teacher award.

For her prize, a three bedroom house would be built for her at a place of her choice. She also carried away a laptop computer, while her school received a desktop computer and accessories.

Mr Philip Kwabena Bukari of the Sekondi College was adjudged the first runner-up and drove home in a double-decker pick-up vehicle, laptop and desktop computer and accessories for his school.

The second runner-up position went to Mr Agonyo Doni of the T.I Ahmadiyya Senior High School (SHS) in Kumasi and was a proud recipient of a saloon car and laptop computer. He also won for his school desktop computer and accessories.

Eighty-two (82) other teachers, non-teaching staff, retired teachers, foreign volunteers and national service personnel were also rewarded at the 18th National Best Teacher Awards Ceremony held at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi.

They received double door fridges, LCD television sets, laptop computers, gas cookers, cylinders and regulators, home theatres, certificates and citations.

The Saint Mary’s Junior High School in the Kasena-Nankana District was adjudged the best “HIV and AIDS Alert School” for the year.

Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, praised teachers for their selfless and dedicated services, which had helped to provide high quality human resource for the nation’s development.

He underlined government’s commitment towards improving the welfare of teachers and the educational infrastructure to enhance teaching and learning at all levels.

Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, congratulated the award winners for their hard work, commitment and dedication to duty and urged all teachers and stakeholders in education to work together to raise the quality of the nation’s education.

Agyewodin Professor Adu Gyamfi Ampem, Omanhene of Acherensua and Chairman of the Ghana Education Service Council, suggested to the Ministry of Education to consider expanding the awards package and to make it prominent at the district level so that more teachers could be covered.

Mr Samuel Doe Alobuia, acting National President of Ghana National Association of Teachers, spoke of the need to empower and adequately motivate teachers to enhance thei performance.

“Take a stand for teachers” was the theme for this year’s event.
