Gov’t takes over GH¢137m Achimota-Ofankor road

China Railway Corporation, contractors of the Achimota –Ofankor Three Lane Dual Carriageway has handed the project over to government after an inspection of the site by Mr Joe Gidisu, Minister of Roads and Highways.

This means the dual carriage way which was completed within six years could be used by both vehicular and pedestrians.

Addressing the press after the inspecting GH¢137,234,148. 62 road projects which was fully sponsored by the government of Ghana, Mr Joe Gidisu, Minister of Roads and Highways, said the project had significantly reduced the traffic situation on the road.

“The 5.7km journey between Achimota and Ofankor which used to take two hours to complete now can take only five minutes due to the construction of the expressway,” he said.

He said the primary objective of the project was to overcome the heavy traffic congestion which used to occur at Neoplan, Mile 7, Tantra Hill, Taifa and Ofankor Barrier and ensure the safety of road users by traveling on a well constructed road.

He expressed his appreciation to the Chinese company for a good job done adding that government would always work with companies that would deliver.

He pledged Government’s commitment towards the completion of all roads which had been started and urged Ghanaians to keep faith with the Government.

Mr Gidisu expressed concern over the numerous incidence of accidents on expressways and urged pedestrians to make good use of footbridges instead recklessly crossing highways and avoid been hit by vehicles.

Engineer Shelter Yao Lotsu, Resident Engineer, Ghana Highway Authority, said the new expressway which used to be a 2-lane single carriageway had now been endowed with asphalt concrete surfacing, three interchanges, four footbridges, walkways, drains, traffic signals, street lightening among others.

“Others include improved access to basic amenities along the road corridors such as schools, health centres, businesses and commercial centres.
