Kenyan businessman wins Ghana marathon

Alex Kimeli, a Kenyan businessman domiciled in Accra caused a huge upset to emerge winner of the 2012 Accra Milo Marathon.

Kimeli, 27 and a native of Eldoret, located in Western Kenya produced a performance which validated the East African country’s prowess in long distance races finishing the 42.2 kilometre race in a time 2:26:00 last Friday in Accra.

The Kenyan becomes the second non-Ghanaian to win the topmost prize in the 26-year history of the annual event, after Nigerian Gideon Hagack achieved the historic feat in 1994.

Kimeli pocketed a whopping GH¢10,000, and assorted products from headline sponsors, Nestle Ghana Limited, for his achievement in the race that drew over 4000 runners across the country.

Joseph Yandal, a police officer finished second whilst Seth Nuama Boadi, a student of the University of Education, Winneba placed third. Yandal went home with GH¢7,000 and GH¢5,000 for Boadi plus products from sponsors.

The women’s event was dominated by the security services with Police duo Elizabeth Botsor and Josephine Kwakye placing first and third respectively whilst Gifty Abbey of the Ghana Prison Service finished second.

Like the men, Botsor, Abbey and Kwakye went away with cash prizes of GH¢10,000; GH¢7,000 and GH¢5,000 in addition to products from sponsors.

The U-15 girls category saw Zakat Lariba, a 14-year old pupil of the Konkonda Junior High School in the Upper East Region emerging winner whilst Jessica Amevor and Sandra Sgabill of the Volta and Upper East Regions finished second and third.

For the U-15 boys category, Mustapha Alhassan of the Abukari Islamic High School in Kofiase in the Ashanti Region was the winner placing ahead of Seyram Segbefia and Philip Apuri of the Volta and Upper East Regions, who settled for the first runner-up and second runner-up positions.

The winners of the U-15 category were rewarded with a cash prize of GH¢1,200, with GH¢700 and GH¢500 for the second and third place runners.

Moataz El-Hout, Managing Director of Nestle Ghana Limited commended the stakeholders and partners for the organization of a successful event that provided a platform for participants to showcase their talents.
