Ghana out of FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

Ghana’s Black Princesses crashed out of the FIFA U-20 Women World Cup in Japan after a second half German goal by substitute Lina Magull handed them their second defeat in Group D.

The Princesses who were seeking to improve their outing as debutants in 2010, where they exited the competition at the first round, barely staged a fight for a decent result though their performance looked a shade better than their first game which they lost 4-0 to the United States of America.

Ghana held on well in the first period where Germany appeared the most hit by the humid temperature and appeared to be heading for a point off the Europeans until the stroke of time when Magull pulled the trigger in added on time.

The substitute German who took on the Ghana defence cleared defender Linda Addai off her course before running through two other advancing defenders before slotting into the far post to beat goalkeeper Patricia Mantey in post.

The goal, which left keeper Mantey devastated, was seen coming with the Germans asking the Ghanaian back-line many questions throughout the duration.

Keeper Mantey had, however saved Ghana’s blushes in many ways with some breathe-taken saves that left the victors considering options as whether to resort to long drives or walk on the Princesses defence.

Just when it appeared the Princesses could pull a point, Addai fell on the way in her quest to stop Magull who was set clear from a long ball in the middle right at the heart of injury time.

In between play, Ghana hardly threatened as they played as though the tactics was only to contain their opponents rather than attempt at goal. The brightest opportunity came to Florence Dadson and lack of support left her powerless.

Dadson was picked out by Candice Osei Agyemang’s pass from the far right, but the former who was heavily marked, could only get a tip of the ball to attempt a drive that was spilled by goalkeeper Laura Benkarth in the 39th minute.

The Princesses next play China in their last Group D game on Monday.

Line up – Patricia Mantey, Rosemary Ampem, Mercy Myles, Linda Addai, Elizabeth Addo, Alice Danso/Deborah Afriyie, Janet Egyir, Jennifer Cudjoe/Priscilla Saahene, Beatrice Sesu, Candice Osei-Agyeman, Florence Dadson
