Ghana’s mobile SIM cards rise to 23.3 million, inch close to country’s 24.6 million population

Ghana’s cellular SIM subscriber numbers are inching closely to the country’s 24.6 million population. The latest data released by the National Communications Authority (NCA) shows that the total mobile subscriber base as at June 2012 stands at 23,370,773.

This means about 1.3 million SIM subscribers are needed to equal the population which has increased from 18,912,079 in 2000 to 24,658,823 in 2010, a 30.4% increase within the decade, according to the 2010 Census figures released late April 2012.

Giving details of the mobile market share as at June 2012, the NCA in a statement said MTN had a marginal increase but maintained its position as the leader with a subscriber base of 10,757,974 representing 46% of the total market share.

Vodafone had a subscriber base of 4,819,700 representing 21% market share while Tigo had a marginal increase of its subscriber base closing at 3,553,274, representing 15% share.

Airtel, whose share was 13% had its subscriber base increased to 3,021,863 and late entrant Glo Mobile Ghana increased its subscriber base to 990,566 representing 4% of the total market share.

Expresso increased its subscriber base to 227,396.The 227,396 represents 1% of the total market share, the NCA data showed.
