Police chief calls for reinforcement of security in Ghana’s industrial sector
Chief Superintendent Edward Tabiri, Director of Interpol, Ghana, has called for the development and reinforcement of the country’s industrial security sector.
He questioned the quality and professionalism of the sector, and asked “how many professionals do our training institutions turn out regularly in this area as compared to other disciplines?”
Chief Sup Tabiri said: “Far from downgrading the few fine ones in the system, the case in Ghana is not well developed.”.
He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Ghana Chapter (278) of American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) on Saturday in Accra.
The ceremony served as a platform for the Chapter to promote and publicise the work of security professional in Ghana, to drive best standards in the industrial security in Ghana and the West African sub-region.
Chief Supt Tabiri said industrial security was a vital component of every industry of corporate organisations for profit maximization.
He said it would be difficult for owners of industries and corporate institutions to break through even with their huge investments, if they could not nurture and sustain a safe and secured working environment under the control of security experts.
“Achieving safe environment in the workplace calls for certain well-structured and results oriented security management system”, Chief Sup Tabiri said.
He observed that planning and development of strategies to deal with industrial safety and security demanded competent and dedicated professionals.
Chief Supt Tabiri said industries could not afford to experiment with mediocrity when it comes to managing security at the workplace.
“It therefore behoves any well-minded industry owner or entrepreneur to strive for adequate security and safe environment”, he advised.
Chief Supt Tabiri said current security challenges facing many industries in Ghana underscore the need for ASIS International to build synergies with the local security experts.
“Ghana has her chunk of industrial concerns, and like in other jurisdiction, these industries or business had and continue to have security challenges”, he stressed.
Chief Sup Tabiri emphasized that ASIS International provides the right platform for professional interactions and exchange of best practices by our security experts.
He urged all security professionals in Ghana to use the ASIS platform to boost their courage and rub shoulders with others around the globe.
He called for strong partnership with other Chapters, especially the mother Chapter in USA facilitate growth of the Ghana Chapter to lead the way in West Africa.
ASIS is the world’s largest and best recognised security association with about 40,000 members, made up of security professionals from around the globe.
Founded in 1955, ASIS is dedicated to increasing the effectiveness and productivity of security professionals by developing educational programmes and materials that address broad security interests such as the ASIS Annual Seminar and Exhibits as well as specific security topics.
In late 2011, ASIS Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, gave approval for the formation of the Ghana Chapter of ASIS, the first in West Africa outside Nigeria.
