Disclosing this at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Accra April 27, 2012, Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana Mr Samuel Ashitey Adjei described the inflows through the desk as encouraging.

“The China desk has received over a $100 million inflows…it’s been encouraging,” Ashitey Adjei told shareholders of the bank.

Ecobank Transnational Inc. (ETI) in January 2010 signed an agreement with the Bank of China to open the “China desk” located at its Ghana unit (Ecobank Ghana).

The desk was formally launched and became operational April 11, 2011. It is to help facilitate international trade, infrastructure projects and investments between Africa and Asia.

The desk is manned by two employees each from Ecobank and the Bank of China and offer on-hand business support and facilitation to Chinese businesses located on the continent.

I have always been skeptical about the Chinese in Africa. A lot of the citizens in the country are not happy about the way the Chinese are exploiting us, from poor government deals that clearly shows we are signing away our sovereignty with potential negative consequences for future generations, Chinese shops are just been developed every where in the city under the guise of doing business, mining areas are seriously being polluted, local people are complaining and no one is paying attention. I hope this so called “inflows” from the Chinese is not a true sign of exploitation! Let’s be wise..
