School Cadets asked to form road safety clubs
The Deputy Central Regional Minister, Mr Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, has called on school cadet corps to form road safety clubs to help promote road safety in schools.
He said, to address carnage on the roads, it was imperative for a shared and collective responsibility in dealing with road safety issues in the country.
Mr Quansah said this when he addressed participants at a road safety health walk dubbed: “safety at your door step” organized by the central regional office of the National Road safety Commission (NRSC) in Cape Coast.
The walk, which started at the Aggrey Memorial Zion School and ended at the Robert Mensah’s Stadium, saw participants from University of Cape Coast Atlantic Hall, Adisadel College, St Augustine’s Collage, Aggrey Memorial Zion School Cadet Corps and Victory Keep Fit Club.
The students carried placards with inscriptions such as: “don’t drive tired”, “avoid cell phone calls while driving”, “seat belts saves life always wear them”, “if you drink don’t drive.”
The walk was aimed to raise awareness on the road traffic Act, road signs and markings.
Mr Quansah expressed concern about the way some drivers disregard the use of zebra crossings and urged the Commission to endeavour to organize periodic education on traffic laws and regulations for drivers in the region.
The Deputy Regional Minister urged pedestrians and drivers to always be careful on the roads and observe road signs and markings as well as wear their seat belts.
Mr Stephen Anokye, the Central Regional Manager of NRSC said the walk was part of activities line-up by the Commission to help reduce motor accidents in the region.
He said it was unfortunate that within the month of January this year, the Cape Coast Metropolitan area alone reported 37 accident cases of which 10 people died with 67 sustaining various degree of injuries.
He described it as an unacceptable situation because 90 per cent of all the accident cases could be avoided.
He said the time had come for all to change their attitude towards road safety issues in the country stressing that the NRSC alone could not address the indiscipline on the roads.
