Farmers lose 85 bags of maize to bushfire

85 bags of maize belonging to farmers in Nkoranza in the Brong-Ahafo Region have been destroyed by bushfire.

The bushfire, suspected to have been caused by a group hunters consumed 15 bags at Abuontam, 20 bags at Dandwa, 30 at Nyinase and 20 at Akumsa Domase, all communities in the Nkoransa South District.

The affected farmers included; Adjei Siakwan, Yaw Amo, Kofi Osei, Yaw Brefo and Jones Amoah.

Mr. Evans Osei-Worae, Nkoranza District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), told the Ghana News Agency (GNA)  that information gathered indicated groups of people had been hunting in the communities.

“A few days after receiving such information, I mobilized some of my personnel into some of the communities where they discovered that four farming communities had already got burnt,” he said.

The District NADMO Co-ordinator said the affected farmers had lodged a complaint with the Police at Nkoranza to track the suspects and expressed the organisation’s sympathy to the affected farmers.

A bag of maize is currently priced at more than GH¢100.00.

Mr. Osei-Worae said other food crops estimated at GH¢8, 500 were also destroyed in the four farming communities.

He called on members of the Assembly and Unit Committees to form local task forces to check group hunting expeditions.

Meanwhile, arrangements are being made to mobilize personnel of the military, police and the fire service to the communities to check the practice.
