Mankessim market to benefit from GH¢1.1m sanitation project

The Mankessim market centre in the Mfantseman Municipality, is to benefit from sanitation projects estimated at GH¢1.1 million under Tripartite Partnership Project (TPP).

Africa Water Facility, a branch of the African Development Bank, is funding the project which will also be implemented at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region and Huni Valley in the Western Region.

The Municipal Assembly is to pay five per cent as counterpart funding.

Training research and Networking for Development (TREND)is the implementing agent for TPP.

Introducing contractors who would be executing the projects to the chiefs, assembly members and the people of Manksesim, Mr Charles Berkoh, a consultant, said the projects which were to be completed in six months had three components, namely sanitation drainage system and public and household toilets.

He said five public toilets, eight waste transfer stations and 1.5-metre length of drainage systems were to be constructed in addition to household toilets.

Mr Berkoh said 12 artisans, two from each electoral area, would be trained to be the main focus for the construction of the household toilets, adding that a credit system was to be instituted to help individuals to access loans for the household latrines.

Mr John Etuah, Mfantseman Municipal Budget Analyst and TPP Desk Officer at the Assembly, said the projects which started about two years ago were now set to take-off, adding that the perennial flooding of Mankessim would soon be a thing of the past.

Mr Etuah expressed happiness that sanitation at Mankessim which the Assembly was struggling to grapple with would soon see some improvement.

Nana Ama Amissah III, Queenmother of Mankessim, appealed to the contractors to engage casual labourers from the town and urged the people not to politicise the project and called on the organisers to lodge the fund for the project  at a bank in the town to make assessment easy.
