Airtel customers in India hit by network outage

Customers of Bharti Airtel in the western part of Maharashtra in India are said to be experiencing a service outage due to a technical glitch in the service provider’s systems that cropped up, reports The Times of India December 27, 2011.

Services are also affected in adjoining areas, including Pune, according to the publication and the network subscribers are sharing their grievances on the official Twitter account of Bharti Airtel.

BlackBerry users are the most badly hit.

“A technical outage has affected our network in the western region, resulting in disruption of some services. We are working toward rectifying the outage at the earliest. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our customers,” The Times of India quoted an Airtel spokesperson as saying in an interview with the Press Trust of India – the largest news agency in India.

With operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa, Bharti Airtel is the largest private telecoms operator in  India. It has a user base of 173.73 million at the end of October, 2011 in the country, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
