Catholic Archbishop calls for improvement of prison conditions

The Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Kumasi, Most Reverend Thomas Mensah, has called on public-spirited individuals and organisations, to help make conditions in the country’s prisons more humane.

It is important to ensure that the prisoners live in human dignity, he stressed.

Archbishop Mensah made the call during the presentation of assorted Christmas gifts to the Kumasi Central Prison by the Church.

The items included used clothing, soap, biscuits, bags of rice and sugar, tubers of yam and bathroom sandals.

Archbishop Mensah reminded the prisoners to reform and to firmly resolve not to go back to the bad habits that led to their imprisonment, after they had regained their freedom.

He said it would be difficult for society to accept them if they persist in evil acts.

Deputy Director of Prisons Kwame Ackom Gyedu said the prison service is doing everything possible to expose the inmates to trades that would enable them to earn decent living.

He, however, appealed for support by way of the supply of vocational training tools and equipment.

He said the prison presented 25 inmates for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination who scored 100 per cent pass.
