Public Services Workers Union gets new General Secretary

Mr Richard .D. Ambarbeng has been elected unopposed as the General Secretary of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress at the Union’s 8th Quadrennial Delegates Conference held in Kumasi.

He took over from Mr A.T.K. Okine who had held the position for 31 years.

Mr Bernard Adjei took the position of Deputy General Secretary when he beat Mr Jacob N.A. Owuo, Mr William Adii and Mr Richard Asepene.

Miss Georgina Opoku Amankwa retained her position for the National Chairperson in a contest with Mr Daniel Arhin-Sam, while Mr Joseph Debrah-Gyamfi beat Mr Elvis Sam Van-Lare, Mr Tano Donkor and Mr Peter Worlali Ametame for the position of First Vice-Chairperson.

Miss Cecilia Naab-Ockling retained her seat as Second National Vice-Chairperson when she defeated Miss Esther Agyemang-Asafo and Miss Sally Agyemang, while the position of the First Trustee went to Mr Ken Kwaku Tweneboah Koduah as he overcame Mr Santos A. Boyegleh and Mr Darko Dodoo.

Madam Fati Seidu-Tambro was also elected unopposed as the Second Trustee of the Union.

Addressing the delegates, Mr Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of the TUC urged union leaders not only to concern themselves with their election into offices but to hold themselves responsible for their stewardship by ensuring that the welfare of their members were seriously addressed.

Mr Asamoah said globalisation was changing employment opportunities and job protection and said there was the need for union leadership in collaboration with their members to come out with comprehensive programmes to provide them with job security.

In a resolution, the Union urged government to come out with the youth policy so as to harness their potential to manage the oil find for the benefit of Ghanaians.

The out-gone General Secretary, Mr A.T.K. Okine expressed appreciation to all those who helped him during his administration and asked them to give same support to the newly elected officers to steer the affairs of the Union for the betterment of all.

He assured them that his doors were always open to readily offer advice and called on the executives to ensure that the Tema and Sunyani hostel projects were earnestly executed.

Miss Opoku Amankwa, the National Chairperson thanked the delegates for attending the conference in their numbers and promised them that they would work to meet the aspiration of members.
