Three large female turtles who visited the Aflao beach to lay eggs were rescued by a Police patrol team when a group of fishermen were about to kill them.

A source close to the team told the Ghana News Agency that at about 0400 hours the suspicion of the police was aroused when the personnel saw a group of fishermen at the beach near the Aflao market.

He said the fishermen fled when they spotted the Police team.

The Police source said the patrol team rescued the turtle upon a tip off.

He said the three reptiles were sent back to the sea but their eggs could not be found.

Sea turtles have been declared endangered species by law making their capture and sale for meat illegal.
