Court jails 30-year farmer for possessing cannabis

A 30-year-old farmer at Akyeremade, a suburb of Asante-Mampong, has been jailed six-months by the Nsuta Circuit Court for possessing cannabis popularly called “wee.”

In addition, Kwame Danquah was ordered to pay a fine of GH¢120.00 or in default serve another 12 years imprisonment in hard labour.

He pleaded guilty to the crime.

Police Inspector Kwasi Aboagye Nketia told the court that Danquah was arrested in July, last year, based upon a tip off.

The police found in his room small quantity of dried leaves, later confirmed as “wee” by the Ghana Standard Board, wrapped in a black polythene bag.

He admitted ownership.

Danquah pleaded with the court to “tamper justice with mercy” and deal leniently with him.

Well, this story is shocking. The end result is that Ghana will end up with less tourists. People don’t like to see people going to jail for a few leaves, this story makes Ghana look like some sort of backward authoritarian regime like N. Korea.
I will never bring my family on holiday to Ghana.
